Dear Parent/Guardian, I welcome you all back to a new year at Olive Secondary School. If you recall, I wrote to you in February this year and explained that we needed to make huge changes to the way we do things because of the massive changes taking place in education. Also, The Olive Foundation has grown over the years and requires restructuring so we can offer the best quality of service in the best possible way.
The Islamic Calendar referred to as the Ḥijrī Calendar is followed by Muslims across the world in order to fulfil their religious obligations. There are certain months which carry more relevance due to the significant religious acts which are performed during them; namely, Ramaḍān, Shawwāl, Dhū al-Ḥijja and Muḥarram, having said that there are religious acts within the other months as well. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the methodology that Muslims in the UK adopt in order to determine the start of the Islamic months.
The fundamental sources of Islamic Law are the Qur’ān, which are the actual Words revealed by Allah to man via Prophet Muhammad and the Prophetic Traditions the Hadīth. However, the key question that arises is how should God’s Words be interpreted by man, if at all? There are three general trends religious scholars have adopted when engaging in the study of Allah’s Words; they can be comfortably divided into, Literalism, Liberalism and Traditionalism. The first requires no premises, principles or attitudes, as the scholars’ input is kept to a bare minimum if not completely eradicated.
Our Prophet (peace be upon him) said,“Never does a Muslim plant a tree, but that they earn the reward of charity because of what is eaten from it. Likewise what is stolen from it, what the wild beasts eat out of it, what the birds eat out of it, and what people take from it- all is charity for them.”

Based in Bradford, UK, Olive lantern trust (OLT) is a registered UK Charity, established in April 2012 by Shaykh Amjad Mohammed. The official launch took place on the 16th August 2012. We work in developing countries by providing individuals with a good education, in order to help better their futures. A future you would want for your children, your family and friends.
Well Olive has been the blessing of this concept and institute since its inception and has now become synonymous with the work that we do.
That I believe is because it is the base, root and foundation of all of Olive’s current and future projects.
